　　A Glimpse of the Province
　　With the Xiangjiang River zigzagging through it, the word Human refers to the province&s location on the southern side of Dongting Lake.This lake is a huge basin surrounded on three sides by mountains and hundreds of small lakes and ponds dotted everywhere along its east side.With a population of 66 million，Hunan，traditionally called&Xiang& for short, covers a total area of over 210,000 square kilometers.Hunan has a humid subtropical monsoon climate, with wet summers, cold winters and abundant rainfall.It is a land of rice and fish with an average temperature of 16℃-18℃ and rainfall
millimeters.The province&s major ethnic groups include Han Chinese as well as the Tujia, Miao, Dong, Yao, Hui, Uygur and Zhuang ethnic minorities.Noted for its famed mountains, rivers and great historical and contemporary figures, Hunan boasts a large number of tourism attractions and resources. Six major national railway lines run through the province, which is also criss-crossed by roads, making it easily accessible. And there are four airports in the province .
　　Historical Figures of Human
　　A large number of outstanding figures have historically come from Human Province, so the province enjoys the reputation of &The Kingdom of Chu, the unique home of talented people&. For example, Cai Lun, who hails from Leiyang in Hunan, improved papermaking technology and introduced the first piece of paper from multiple plant fibers in 105 B.C. This invention has been honored as one of ancient China&s&Four Great Inventions&.The founder of the Confucian school of idealist philosophy in the Song and Ming Dynasties, Zhou Dunyi, came from Yongzhou in Hunan Province.Wang Fuzhi, an outstanding 17th Century Chinese philosopher, was from the Hunan city of Hengyang.During the 79 years from the Opium War to the May Fourth Movement, Hunan Province witnessed the appearance of many important figures in Modern Chinese history.These include Wei Yuan, Zeng Guofan, He Shaoji, Zuo Zongtang, Tan Sitong, Chen Tianhua, Huang Xing and Song Jiaoren.During this period, some 83 people from Hunan are listed in the Dictionary of Major Chinese Historical Figures, or nearly 11%of total number of figures listed in the book.From the May Fourth Movement to the New Democratic Revolution or even to the socialist revolution and construction period, a great number of Party leaders, government officials and military figures emerged from this province. The most outstanding representatives are Mao Zedong, Cai Hesen, Ren Bishi, Liu Shaoqi, Peng Dehuai, He Long, and Luo Ron-ghuan.Meanwhile, a large group of talented writers, artists, scientists and educators have hailed from Hunan Province.These figures include Qi Baishi, the great master of Chinese painting, the noted playwright, Tian Han, the famous playwright, and the well-known writers Shen Congwen and Zhou Libo.
　　Hunan Cuisine
　　Hunan cuisine, one of the eight regional cuisine of China, is famous for its use of chilli and spicy flavor. It is sometimes called Xiang cuisine.Hunan&s chili-rich cuisine is similar to that of western China&s Sichuan province. Chili, garlic, along with the unusual so-called &strange sauce& enliven many dishes.Chairman Mao, who was Hunanese, once claimed that the more chilies one eats the more revolutionary one becomes. It was meant as a joke but the statement is in accordance with the Chinese belief that diet makes a great difference to a person&s well being.

　　湖南因位于洞庭湖之南而得名，因湘江纵贯简称&湘.面积约21万平方千米，人口约6600万。境内呈东、南、西三面环山的马蹄形盆地，东北部的洞庭湖平原湖塘密布，素有&鱼米之乡之称。湖南属于湿润的亚热带季风性气候，夏热冬冷，全年雨水充沛，年平均气温16℃～18℃，年平均降水量毫米。主要民族有汉族、土家族、苗族、侗族、瑶族、回族、维吾尔族和壮族。湖南省是个旅游大省，旅游资源十分丰富，素有&旅游胜地&之称。著称于世的古迹遍布三湘四水。湖南交通便利，六条铁路线纵横贯穿于境内，有长沙黄花机场、张家界机场、常德机场、永州机场四个机场。

　　湖南因人才辈出而享有&唯楚有才，于斯为盛&的美誉。公元前105年，蔡伦，湖南耒阳人，发明的造纸术被誉为中国古代&四大发明&之一;周敦颐，湖南永州人，宋明时期儒家理学思想的奠基人;王夫之，湖南衡阳人，17世纪中国著名的思想家。从鸦片战争到五四运动的79年间，中国近代史上出现了很多湖南名人，如魏源、曾国藩、何绍季、左宗棠、谭嗣同、陈天华、黄兴、宋教仁等。他们都被收录到《中国名人辞典》，占据了全书总人数的10.9%。从五四运动到新民主主义革命和社会主义革命和建设时期，有许多国家领导人都是湖南人，具有代表性的有毛泽东、蔡和森、刘少奇、任弼时、彭德怀、贺龙、罗荣桓等。同时，湖南也出现了大量文学、艺术、科技和教育方面的人才，如著名国画大师齐白石;著名剧作家田汉;著名作家周立波等。
　　湘菜介绍
　　湘菜是中国的八大菜系之一，因辛辣而出名。湘菜多放辣椒，和四川菜有相似之处，主要特色表现在辣味和熏腊制品上，具有浓郁的山乡水乡风味。毛主席曾经说过：&吃不得辣椒就干不得革命!&这当然是个笑话，但也说明了大家普遍认为的饮食决定一个人性格的说法。
