It's somewhat different in the Federation. There is a chain of command but you're free to leave at any time. There aren't inherited titles or offices, but instead it's (ideally) a meritocracy. Compare it to Special Circumstances in the Culture series. Contrast it with our current power structure and you'll see what I was getting at.
In any case I've never been clear on what the economy in the Federation is based on. It doesn't seem strictly post scarcity (like the aforementioned Culture) as there is some kind of trading system as you say, but, at least on the more settled planets, there doesn't seem to be any concerns past real estate.
You should try reading some Daniel Quinn. I think the quote is from Beyond Civilization, but I'd start with Ishmael.
I'll over simplify some here (although not nearly as much as the article's author), but the point Quinn makes in Beyond Civ is that once you start producing surplus crops and farming in our style (the agricultural revolution is in many ways a change in worldview) it leads to certain societal consequences, one of which is some people come out on top, in charge of a large number underneath. A pyramid, which is frequently reflected in mega-works projects around the globe. You can see this change particularly well in the Maya or Aztec (and especially their precursor cultures) when they adopted a similar worldview. When they abandoned it, and it's pyramid building ways, they just went back to the jungle again. These days our modern pyramids are mostly corporations and governments, but they come in all forms.
You're right that Trek is post scarcity. I think the author is suggesting that the replicator and energy technology enables them to stop building metaphorical (or literal) pyramids and instead work on themselves. I disagree with the author however that they've abandoned the worldview that enables the pyramid building in the first place.

The average quality of life, education, personal liberty, political inclusion, lifespan and infant mortality, etc has been increasing since at least the middle ages. Sure there are setbacks, sometimes quite large ones, but globally things have been steadily getting better.

Exactly, but this post is about something which is really wha I know I subconsciously evaluate the people around me for shitty personality traits. I work with an asshole who tends to talk down to the women there, has temper tantrums, and throws shit. I disliked him from the start. I work with women I dislike because they're completely unmotivated, and didn't like them from the start either.
My point is this isn't about all men or all feminists, it's about shitty people. They exist, like fake 20s, and those shitty people try to pass themselves off as decent, but there's some things they can't hide.
Some shitty people have a lot of good traits, and it's important to be aware of those. I worked with a 20-something who I'm fairly sure is a sociopath, but would try hard enough to get people to like him that he was actually a decent guy, not feeling empathy or caring about you, but willing to go through the motions of being helpful and giving anyway.
My point is that there are two major ways to live your life in regards to people: you can either go through your life fearing everyone, assuming they're going to hurt you, checking to see if they're good. Or you can assume people are decent until you get that feeling that warns you away. That's how I live.
I have a direction I want my life to go in, and every now and then I circumstances give me a little bump one way or the other. If the bump is in the desired direction then I go with it and move a little that way. If it isn't then I try and resist or redirect the energy. Thus I tend to make progress toward what I want my life to look like.

Seriously though the Macbeth superstition has to be one of the dumbest. At least not walking under ladders has a practical purpose. Why does it have such a reputation? Because theatres in trouble go for Shakespeare, so it looks like they close after doing the show. It also has a bunch of fight scenes at the end, easy to overlook or not rehearse properly (especially for a theatre in trouble) so people get hurt doing it. It's not the witches, and it's not a curse, it's just a 400-year old popular play that gets produced a lot and sometimes gets people stabbed.

What the fuck are you arguing then? The Earth has been very hot in the past. It used to be able to support giant insects. So yes, no matter how hot it gets (until we reach Venusian levels) the climate now is similar to that of some climate at some time in the past. It's been very cold too, so if the seas freeze over to the poles again we can still say it's similar climate as we've had in the past.
The climate is not the same as it was when the tools were dropped, because if it was the snow they are sitting on would have melted like it's doing today.
