Healed From Our Past Relationship
Break-Ups and How You Can Too...
As we mentioned earlier, we're relationship coaches Susie and
Otto Collins and we've been together since 1997. Even though we are
married, still together and have a great relationship, we
totally and completely understand what you're going through and what
you're feeling because we've been there.
Before we got together
(and certainly long before we became relationship coaches, authors
and speakers), we both went through painful break-ups and divorces.&Susie was married
to someone else for 30 years and Otto was married to someone else for 15
We'd like to tell you our stories about what we went through and how we
were able to heal from all our pain to show you how you can too...
&Susie's Story (in her words)...
&I saw the break-up of my 30 year marriage to my previous
husband long before it actually happened but when it actually happened, I was
devastated. For many years, the two of us had drifted apart, almost leading
separate lives. I took a lot of workshops and trainings that didn't interest him
and I wasn't interested in hanging around his new friends. We just wanted to
live our lives differently.
&Together, we decided that our marriage was over but when
the actual time came for him to move out, I was so afraid and upset that I almost couldn't breathe. A few days
after he left, I remember rushing outside to lay in my hammock because I just
couldn't get my breath when I was in the house alone. My thoughts and fears
would get the best of me and even though I knew it was the best thing for us to
separate, I was truly frozen with fear about how I was going to maintain the
house on my own and that I might never find someone else to love and who would
&I felt so alone--more alone than I had ever felt in my
life. Because I married as soon as I graduated from college, I had never lived
alone in my entire life. I remember going to work in a daze and somehow getting
through the week but when Friday evening came, feeling so alone and unloved that
I didn't know where to turn--even though I had a lot of friends. But they were
married and I wasn't or wouldn't be much longer. Although they were
understanding, they really couldn't understand what this loneliness felt like to
&I felt like everything in my life had been turned upside
down and I didn't even know who I was anymore.
Believe me, I did a lot of things wrong
after my now ex left--things that just kept making my pain worse.
&I spent several months after he moved out
about him--whether he was taking care of himself, his new living conditions and
how he was emotionally.
&I kept rehashing the past. I went
over and over in my mind how we might have done it differently and
re-living the &good& times. I guess it was easier worrying
about him than how lonely and unhappy I was.
&My friends were all on my 'side' (even though the split
was mutual, my ex was involved with someone else) and I found myself playing up
the martyr role and actually liking it. It was easy to take the sympathy of my
friends and continue talking about how he did me wrong by leaving.
&I remember the day vividly when it all shifted
and I got the solution to stopping my pain. I was
standing in my living room and the single thought came to me--'What about me?
What do I want for my future?'.
&It was the first time in many months that I thought about
what I wanted for my future. I physically turned my body in the direction I
thought was my future and just stood there.
&No earth-shattering vision of my
future came to me, but what did come to me was the inner-knowing that for the
first time in many years--maybe forever--I was free to envision what 'I' wanted and
then take steps toward it.
&There were a lot of other ways I learned
to support myself as I continued to heal from my break-up.
&It wasn't too many months after that day that Otto and I
came together and started creating the magical relationship we have now. I know in
my heart that if I had never started saying 'yes' to me and to my happiness that
my magical relationship with Otto would never have happened. I had to start thinking about my future
and what I wanted while making peace with the past.
&Did this happen overnight? No, of course not. Making
peace with the past, clearly knowing what I wanted for my future and then
opening to it was a gradual process. But I decided I was worth it and
I decided that I was going to make the changes that I needed to make in myself
so that I could attract and keep the love I wanted.&
Otto's Story (in his words)...
&When my previous marriage of 15
years ended I was lost.
&My son was 8 years old at the time and telling him about the divorce was
the single hardest thing I've ever had to do.
&After the break-up,
even though I am a man, the pain was so great that all I wanted to
do was cry, go back to bed or distract myself somehow from what I was
&I had just started a
new job and thank god the job I had was one where my boss was two hours
away. It was just me and one other woman that worked in my department and
we were basically on our own with no one checking up on us.&
&This was a good thing because I was grieving so much that not only
did I not want to work but I couldn't focus or concentrate on even the
smallest of tasks when I tried.
&Since the woman I worked with was moving soon and would be leaving the
company and the area within a couple of months, she wasn't too interested
in working either so I would spend all the time I was &supposed& to be
working talking to her about what I was feeling and how much pain I was
&As I think about how I felt in the days, weeks and months after my
previous marriage ended, I alternated between feeling sad, angry (lots
of anger came up),&feeling hurt, and confused. To be honest, there
was even a desire to make my ex pay for what had happened, even though I
knew that the break-up and all these horrible feelings I was having were
not just her fault.
&In addition to losing the woman who I thought I would be with forever, I
also got to find out who my true friends were.
&Some of best friends (friends I had had for years) betrayed me and wanted
nothing to do with me after my break-up with my now ex-wife.
&In some ways, all these years later, I still grieve the loss of those
friendships. Some of those friends that didn't
'understand' were people I had been friends with since I was in the 3rd
grade in elementary school and had been through a lot together.
&Luckily, I had other friends who did help me though this dark period in
my life and I also reconnected with my family who I had become somewhat
distant from. Reconnecting with them helped give me a feeling of
stability and gave me strength that I could go on.
&I did a lot of other things to heal after my break up as well.
&I prayed, meditated and read every book on relationships and healing I
could get my hands on.
&I also went to counseling and found that to be really valuable in
finding and accepting my part in the break-up. I learned how to make
peace with all the pain I was feeling.&
&All of this helped me to get ready for creating the great relationship
Susie and I have now.&
As you just read...
We both went through a lot of difficult times in those
dark hours, days and weeks after our break- ups AND here are some
important lessons for healing that can help you ...
As you can probably tell..
These breakups of our previous marriages affected us very deeply in very
fundamental ways.
When our previous marriages broke up, we each searched for a
solution to pain, the upset, feelings of unworthiness, isolation, anger,
resentment, uncertainty and betrayal that was inside of us.&
You can probably now
see what we eventually found out--that all these gyrations that
you put yourself through after a break-up or divorce are just the ways you are trying to ease your
pain and move on.
After the two of us got
together in our relationship, we made the decision that we were going to
do everything we could possibly do to make sure you (and everyone else
we could reach) would never have to go through the pain and heartbreak
that we went through.
This is one of the
reasons we eventually decided to become relationship coaches.
It's also the
reason we created our &How To Heal Your Broken Heart& program.
Now That Your Partner's Gone and
You're Alone,
Here's How To Deal With All The Pain That You're
Feeling...
One of the best ways that will help you to heal from your
break-up or divorce is to learn how to deal with your negative thoughts and
out-of-control emotions that come up over and over.
They are actually keeping you in pain and believe it or
not, you can learn to change them so that you can function better in your daily
We're not talking about controlling your thoughts.
What we are talking about is acknowledging your thoughts
and emotions and then consciously changing them.
Impossible?
Not at all.
Maybe you have a toddler in your life or if you don't
have one right now, you remember what it was like. You might remember diverting the toddler's attention whenever he or
she was about to do something that might cause injury or pain.
You might have diverted the toddler's attention with a toy
or something else that he or she might enjoy.
The point was to re-focus the toddler's attention toward
something that was more desirable than the &dangerous& activity that he or she
was focused on.
The same is true for you when you are feeling
like a &victim& or
&martyr& and it's keeping you stuck in the past--or you are
deeply into blaming either yourself or your ex for what happened and that blame
is holding you back from the life you want.
While you never should discount your feelings, you can
begin to choose which ones you will focus on and which ones you aren't so that
you start to feel better and move toward your healing.
The 3 Minute Break-Up
Pain Stopping Technique
Here's a very simple technique that takes 3 minutes that
you can practice anytime you start to feel overwhelmed by your fearful, angry
feelings and negative thoughts.
Use this technique when
your negative thoughts and feelings are keeping you from functioning in your
daily life and you want to shift them to more empowering ones. Negative thoughts
and feelings can become a habit but they can also be changed.
SIT--Sit in a quiet
place. (The bathroom will do).
SETTLE--Close your
eyes, take a few deep breaths, bringing your breath into your feet so that
you feel grounded and connected to the earth. Feel yourself slowing down and
your breathing deepen. (Maybe 30 seconds)
AWARENESS--Come into
awareness of your negative thoughts in this moment. (What exactly are you
thinking? Example: &I'm thinking that I'm a real loser when it comes to
relationships.&)
ASK--Ask yourself if you know your negative thoughts to be true--absolutely
true. Can you find evidence to the contrary? Chances are you can find somewhere in
your life where your thoughts cannot be substantiated.
ALLOW--Bring your attention to your heart or
gut area and feel the sensations in your body. (What are you feeling in your
body? Is there tightness, a big knot, emptiness, heaviness?) Allow your
sensations to be there without judging them and breathe into that area of
the body. (If you feel heavy in your heart area, breathe into that heaviness
until the sensation softens. If you felt a knot in your gut area, breathe
into that knot until it starts to loosen.)
REPLACE--Replace the
limiting, self-defeating &movie& running in your head to one that is more in
alignment with what you want in your life--because the reality is that both
outcomes are possible. Run this new movie whenever you feel your negative
thoughts coming up in the future. (If you know that your negative thoughts
aren't true but you see yourself alone forever and in pain, replace that &movie& with
one that could happen that you'd like much better. See yourself taking your
next step in an empowered way instead of the damaging cycle you find
yourself in.)
Practice this as many times a
day that you need. Keep a copy of it with your phone in case you are tempted to call your ex.
Put a copy in your car to remind you to stop yourself before you drive by his or
her new living situation.
Biggest Myth Of All About What It Takes To
Heal After a Relationship Break up ...
As we continue to work with our relationship breakthrough coaching
nearly every one we've ever talked to after a break-up or divorce has
said that they've been told by someone that the most important factor in the healing process is time.
Unfortunately, the people who
say that &time& is the most important factor in healing after a break-up are
While we agree that time
passing is important in the healing process, it's simply not the only factor
or even the most important factor in healing as some people believe it is.
Here's why...
If time passing (maybe 6 months) is the only thing that needs to happen
in order for you to heal your pain and
broken heart, then all you would need to do is let a certain amount of
time pass and poof-- just like magic-- your pain would disappear and your
heart would be healed.
Unfortunately, this isn't
the way the healing process works. It isn't just the time that's
important. It's what you do with that time that determines whether you heal
heart or not.
If time passing was the most
important factor in healing after a break-up or divorce, then it would
be like having a baby. If all goes
well, about 9 months later, out comes a healthy new baby boy or girl.
If it worked the same way in
healing after a break-up, a certain amount of time would pass and
&presto& your heart would magically be healed and you would then be able
to go into a new relationship without any
baggage from your past.
If this were the way it
really was, it would be great. But the truth is that we all know people
who've experienced a relationship break-up or divorce and many months or
years later, they are still angry, bitter and holding onto the pain of
that past relationship.&
If you ever hope to heal
your heart and find the courage to truly open yourself up to love again, you're going to have to do some things besides simply letting time pass.
SHOULD you do besides letting time pass in order to heal your heart
and truly get over your break-up or divorce?
That's a great question and...
This is what we show you how
to do in our &How To Heal Your Broken Heart& book and audio program...

Success Stories...
"Just read your book about healing a broken heart yesterday. It
has made an immediate impact! October 6th will mark three months since I
saw the person I split up with and your book, which I read in one go on
a day home from work with the flu, changed my whole perspective.
Haven't had the need to google him once today and have stopped being
curious about what he might be doing.
&Although I've had isolated moments
like this since I left July 6th, this is sustained. I'm feeling great,
and looking forward to feeling even better, day by day. What a wonderful
book! I'm telling everyone!! Have also ordered your book on jealousy -
my big problem. Much looking forward to reading it. Thank you sooooooo
much for making me feel so much better and ready to embrace my future in
a big way!!!
knew going into this relationship that it was not healthy but persisted
with the thought in the back of my mind that it was meant to teach me
something important, and How to Heal Your Broken Heart is a real road
map for that process so I&m very happy that I stumbled on to it on the
internet. I also like the way it is laid out and how practical it is in
the kind of advice and suggestions it offers. An excellent and really
uplifting book all around.&

&I was moved by the clarity, honesty and compassion with
which Susie and Otto presented the information on ways to
heal from a break up or divorce. I had in fact just the day
before begun the break up process with my boyfriend, and
this teleseminar was literally perfect timing! I took notes
and I have referred to them regularly during this time of
transition in my life. I enjoyed the seminar immensely and
am grateful I had the opportunity to participate. Thank you
