一天，一个律师的妻子生病了，律师去找了个医生。医生很愿意过来为女士诊断，并看看自己有什么能帮得上的。但是就在进入房子之前，医生停下了。他听说这个律师在逃账方面很出名。所以他对律师说“但是如果我治好了你的妻子，我担心你不付账”。 “先生”，律师答道，“我这有500美元，不论你治好还是害死我的妻子，我都全部给你。” 医生确信，并进入了房间。当他来到了女士的床边，他很快意识到他什么也帮不上。她病得很重，尽管医生帮她服了药，她还是很快死去了。 他向律师表达了自己的歉意，然后向律师索取之前答应的钱。 “你害死了我的妻子么？”律师问。 “当然没有。”医生说。 “很好！那你治好了我的妻子么？”律师又问。 “很抱歉的说那是不可能的。”医生答道。 “那么，你既没有害死我的妻子，也没有治好她，我不会付你任何东西的。”
