be heard of 是听说的意思。也可以，就是与原意有些出入。strike 是打点儿的意思+ing是进行时
我认为你的译法基本上都没问题。1，可以那样译；2，check本身就是检查的意思，这里只不过是工作人员的职责，你完全可以理解为“例行检查”，不一定非要认为是特意去“矫正”它；3，我觉得“打点”这种译法也凑合，毕竟大家基本上都能明白那个“整点敲响”的意思。strike的意思是“击打”，字典不会非要列出你要的意思吧。最后说一下翻译的最高要求当然是“信”、“达”、“雅”，但无论如何不能死板。
