Canada, the second largest country in the world, lies in the north of America. The population of Canada is about 29 million and the capital is Ottawa. The country covers about 9,980,000 square kilometers and six of the world’s 24 time areas (时区) as well. There are two official languages spoken in Canada: French and English. Many people can speak both English and French. More than 60% of Canadians speak English as their language. About 25% of the Canadians speak French. In one province of Canada where French is the common language, the programmes on TV and radios as well as the teaching in schools are all in French. Today, Chinese has become the first inofficial(非官方的) language in Canada.Canada’s climate is not as cold all year around as some may believe. In winter, temperatures fall below freezing point throughout most of Canada. In summer, the southern provinces often experience high levels of temperatures that can reach over 30℃ regularly. As the cold northern climate, only one-fifth of the land is suitable for farming. As it is known to all, Canada has one-third of the world’s supply of fresh water. It has many great lakes. There are five great lakes in the south. And there are many others, especially in the north. It is also rich in natural resources, such as coal, oil, natural gas of which Canadians make use to produce energy.People of northern Canada are called Inuit (因纽特人), who came from Asia and settled in Canada about 4,000 years ago. They used to travel around from place to place with teams of dogs which pulled their baggage. Now, they seldom move. There are about 2,500 Inuit in all. The government has started a new school project in which Inuit teach their own young children. So it is hoped that the way of Inuit life will be kept alive for more centuries.小题1:How many people are there living in Canada?A.About 24 million.B.About 29 million.C.About 25 million.D.About 9,980,000.小题2:Today, most Canadians speak _________ as their first language.A.FrenchB.ChineseC.EnglishD.Japanese小题3:Only ________ of the land is fit for farming because of the cold northern climate. Take a look at teenagers around, dressed in baggy-pants (宽松裤), drinking soft drinks such as coke, reading Japanese cartoons. Whether you are in Beijing, Wuhan or Hong Kong, you will get the same impression. But should we copy others or should we maintain (保留) our differences? It sounds convenient that people around the world speak the same language, dress in the same style, eat the same food and play the same games. If the world was like this, you won’t feel strange in any corner of world. But just imagine living in such a strange world. How dull and colorless it would be!Different kinds of food that people can taste, the colorful and fashionable clothes that we dress in and different languages we speak are all part of the different cultures that our ancestors left us. These differences represent their creativity (创造力) and talent. And we all enjoy different cultures in our daily lives. When you travel to other places, you want to see different things. When you talk to foreigners you expect to listen to interesting stories. These differences in culture are what make life colorful. But the whole world is shrinking into a small village as globalization (全球化) takes effect and many different cultures are disappearing. In most big cities around the world people wear the same clothes. Fast food stores are everywhere. Hollywood movies are kicking traditional performing arts out of our lives. The colors of our life are disappearing. There is joke that even the panda and zebra want to live a colorful life. So let’s take action to protect our colorful culture before it becomes as simple as black and white. It’s not difficult. American and British people use different greetings. In the USA the commonest greeting is “Hi”. In Britain it is “Hello!” or “How are you?” “Hi!” is creeping(不知不觉地进入)into British, too. When they are introduced to someone, the Americans say, “Glad to know you. ” The British say, “How do you do?” or “Pleased to meet you. ” When Americans say “Good-bye”, they nearly always add, “Have a good day. ” or “Have a good trip. ” etc. to friends and strangers alike. Britons are already beginning to use “Have a good day. ”The British usually use “got” in the sense of “have”. The Americans hardly ever do. AmE: Do you have a car, room, etc. ? Yes, I do. BrE: Have you got a car, room, etc. ? Yes, I have. There are a number of differences between American and British English in the spelling of words, e. g. check(US)/cheque(UK). Many American words ending in “or”, e. g. honor, labor are spelt in British English with an “our,” e. g. honour, labour. Many verbs in American English with “ize” or “izing” forms, e. g. organize, realizing are spelt in BrE with “ise” or “ising”, e. g. organise, realising. In American English, “practice” is used both for the verb and noun. In BrE, the verb is spelt “practise”, and the noun “practice. ” In AmE, one writes “traveler,” while in BrE, one writes “traveller”.It was once predicted that British and American English would become separate (各自的)languages finally.
It was Thanksgiving morning. I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step.
“Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them.
I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow.
“Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”
They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking.
The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”
“Am I rich? Pity, no!”
I looked at my worn-out slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.
Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.
I tasted the potatoes and stirred(搅动)the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.&

As the global financial crisis hits the economy, it's tough finding a job—especially if you're competing with thousands of other hopeful students. Sometimes you get the interview, but don't quite seem to land the job because you don't have related experience. Don't despair! Here are a few tips that might give you an edge.
★ Get connected to your network and try to expand it. Talk to friends, family and acquaintances. Let everyone know you are looking for a job.
★ Prepare your resume (个人简历) carefully and be sure it's perfect. Have someone else read it over for typos (打字错误) and grammatical errors. Get professional help. It's worth the money to present yourself well. If money is tight, read books on resume writing from your public library or search for free help on the Internet.
★ When you apply for a job, be sure you match and list any skills listed on the posting with the skills you have. If you get an interview, be sure to describe those skills thoroughly. Just having the skills is not enough. Expressing your abilities well can make all the difference in getting the job.
★ Research typical interview questions and practice interviewing. Be well prepared for every interview.
★ Don't be afraid to accept a position for which you are overqualified—if there's room for advancements. Many great job advancements come from first doing well at an entry-level position. If you have the right skills and attitude, it won't be long before you're in the job you want.
★ Volunteer for a few weeks in your field of study to gain experience if you feel your resume needs an improvement.
★ When deciding what to wear for an interview, think about the position level and the dress code of the organization.
★ Use every tool available to you. For example, this site has many job links for your use.
Good luck!

Boys need friends, suffer when they don't believe they have any, and worry over the ups and downs of relationships. Many adults believe that somehow boys need friends less than girls do, in truth, though, boys value their friends throughout childhood and adolescence and are happier and healthier when they have solid relationships with peers(同龄人).
Despite the common belief that girls are better at relationships, most boys consider their friends a very important part of their lives, and boys may actually be better at keeping friendships than girls are. A recent study of 10 to 15-year-old boys and girls found that girls' friendships are actually more fragile. Girls tend to say and do hurtful things to each other more frequently than boys, and girls are more hurt by the end of a friendship.
Boys are the living definition of the phrase “peer group”; they love games with rules, competition, and doing things together. Boys seem to enjoy, even need the opportunity to test themselves against others, and many lasting friendships begin in karate(空手道) class or on the basketball court. Competence and skill
being picked last for a team or left out altogether is an experience that can haunt(萦绕心头) a boy for years.
As boys mature, the friendship becomes even more important, and it frequently widens to include girls. During the teen years, friends can become the most important part of a boy's life—and a part in which his parents are not included. The confusion of being a teenager leads boys to form close bonds with friends. There is the sense for many boys that a friend is someone who is “always there for me”, someone he can trust. They may be partners in crime or partners in study, but the friendship of adolescent boys can run surprisingly deep.

The number of speakers of English in Shakespeare's time is estimated(估计) to have been about five million. Today it is estimated that some 260 million people speak it as a native language, mainly in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the standard varieties of English found in these areas, there are a great many regional and social varieties of the language as well as various levels of usage that are employed both in its spoken and written forms.
In fact, it is impossible to estimate the number of people in the world who have acquired an adequate(足够的) working knowledge of English in addition to their own languages. The purpose for English learning and the situations in which such learning takes place are so varied that it is difficult to explain and still more difficult to judge what forms an adequate working knowledge for each situation.
The main reason for the widespread demand for English is its present-day importance as a world language. Besides serving the indefinite needs of its native speakers, English is a language in which some of important works in science, technology, and other fields are being produced, and not always by native speakers. It is widely used for such purposes as meteorological and airport communications, international conferences, and the spread of information over the radio and television networks of many nations. It is a language of wider communication for a number of developing countries, especially former British colonies. Many of these countries have multilingual populations and need a language for internal communication in such matters as government, commerce, industry, law and education as well as for international communication and for entrance to the scientific and technological developments in the West.&

Walking is a great way to get in shape without breaking the bank (it’s free and you do it every day).It benefits people physically, psychologically and socially. Here are how:
Keeps You in Good Health
In terms of health, walking is the key to managing weight, controlling blood pressure, and reducing the risk of a stroke, breast cancer, and many other illnesses. A quick and energetic daily walk lengthens your life, decreases the risk of disappointment and keeps up your mood and sense of well-being.
Keeps You Mentally Refreshed
From a psychological viewpoint, walking offers an opportunity to clarify thoughts, to solve problems and to reduce stress. If you take a walk that is relaxing and peaceful, walking can also become a form of meditation(冥想).
Allows for Social Relationship
Walking regularly with someone else enables a friendship to develop as the pair of you exercise. You can also schedule regular walk “dates” with your partner and use the time to discuss questions without being disturbed.
Lets You See the World Around You
Also, the best way to explore some of the world’s great cities—such as New York, London, Paris and Rome—is on foot. Walking motivates the senses and enables you to enjoy a rich life around you. Wordsworth, who is believed to have travelled around the world seven times during his lifetime, always delighted in the truth that “going for a walk is an invitation for surprise”.
Here are some tips to get going:
Get a walking partner and meet each week at a set time.
Get a dog and you’ll have a constant walking companion.
Choose a spot that is charming but accessible.
Start with a soft walk, then increase the pace and distance.
Include some hills and stairs.
Use an umbrella if it rains: the worst that can happen is that you get wet!

According to a survey among middle school students, many students have the following bad habits:
________________________________________________________________________
give off “发散”, put off “取消”,get off “下车”,均不符合题意。
moreover“此外,而且”;therefore“因此,所以”;otherwise“否则,要不然”。
此题涉及固定结构have difficulty(in) doing sth,意为“做……很困难”。“what great difficulty I had…complicated ideas in simple English.”为感叹句,其陈述句为:“I had great difficulty…complicated ideas in simple English.”。
take up开始从事/喜欢,占据;make up编造,讲和,弥补,打扮,组成;look up向上看,查找;turn up把声音调大,出现。
“Here you are.”表示同意请求,所以选by all means“当然可以”,相当于of course或certainly。
get to know意为“认识”。

小男孩的问话 “Lady, are you rich?” 和小女孩的话 “Your cups match your saucers”引起了作者对富裕的深刻思考, 改变了她原先对幸福的片面认识,因此用“Lady, are you rich?”
由第三段“I was busy. I wanted to say ‘no’ until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow.”
由最后一段中的“Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.”

根据第三段“Boys seem to enjoy, even need the opportunity to test themselves against others, and many lasting friendships begin in karate(空手道) class or on the basketball court.”
该研究显示“girls' friendships are actually more fragile”,并解释了其原因,由此可推知选C。
根据最后一段“a part in which his parents are not included”可知C为答案。
56. Why Walking Is Good for You/Advantages of Walking/Walking Is Good for You
57. To arrange.
58.By decreasing the risk of disappointment and keeping up our mood and sense of well-being.
59.To tell us that walking motivates the senses and enables us to enjoy a rich life around us./ To make us believe that walking can let us see the world around us.
由文意可知,这个例子是用来论证上一句话“Walking motivates the senses and enables you to enjoy a rich life around you.”的。
60.On foot. Because walking motivates the senses and enables us to enjoy a rich life.
One possible version:
Let's develop a healthy lifestyle
According_to_a_survey_among_middle_school_students,_many_students_have_the_following_bad_habits:_staying up going to school without breakfast and often ea spending much time chatting on QQ or playing computer games.
As we know, if you often stay up late at night, you will feel tired and sleepy during the daytime and cannot concentrate in class. Going to school without breakfast or eating instant noodles instead of meals will cause a lack of nutrition. Spending too much time on QQ or computer games will do harm to your eyes.
In terms of study and health, we should develop a healthy lifestyle. First, go to bed a bit earlier instead of staying up late. Second, keep a balanced diet to build up our bodies. Third, don't spend too much time on the Internet. Actually, there are varieties of activities for us to relax ourselves, such as doing sports or listening to music.
